Brighton Science Festival Sussex Schools’ Project
23 January 2007
On Monday 22 January, Tanbridge House School welcomed celebrity scientist, Jonathan Hare, BBC Presenter from Rough Science as part of this years Sussex Schools’ Project.
Marking the 60th anniversary of the transistor, this year's project is focusing on electricity. Jonathan gave a short talk to some fortunate Tanbridge House School students in years 7, 8 and 9 about what electricity is and then threw the students the challenge of making electricity from a potato, a nail and some pencil lead. To the students amazement this turned out to be possible! The potato batteries didn’t produce much electricity, but just one potato powered a calculator, and a string of them produced enough voltage to power an LED and when all the potato batteries in the science lab were strung together they even powered a radio.
Tanbridge House School Science Teacher Alison Etherington said it was a fantastic opportunity for the Tanbridge students, who are currently working towards their Bronze Crest Science Award and were therefore all extra keen to make the potato powered batteries.
