Energising students
On Thursday 4th November, 14 Year 9 students visited the Hawth Theatre to attend a workshop on energy supply, run by EDF. The purpose was to encourage students to opt for STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in their options. The workshop consisted of a number of sessions:
• Students were given a number of power cut scenarios and had to decide how they would deal with it if the main priority was safety, lost time or a priority on both. THS students successfully chose the correct order for all three scenarios.
• Students were given a talk on safety gear, how it is used and the role that above ground engineers have. Students highlighted this as a good part of the day, gaining knowledge and sustaining their interest.
• The various pathways into engineering were explored including apprenticeships, university courses and other routes into the industry that do not require engineering specific degrees (such as accounting, counselling and admin). Students felt that this gave them a great insight into the various routes into STEM-related careers.
• Finally, students took part in a quiz and Tanbridge won by a clear margin, winning a 2GB memory stick in the shape of a Lego man engineer!
Student feedback was very positive; they enjoyed the tasks and really threw themselves into the quiz.
