Geography

Course Outline

The Geography department enjoys the facilities of a dedicated suite of classrooms, each equipped with Video/DVD and interactive white boards and the usual visual aids. ICT facilities are regularly used by Geography classes. We have a very comprehensive stock of varied textbooks and a large video library to assist learning. The department is currently developing its resources for using the interactive white boards recently acquired.

Course Content - Key Stage 3

Geography in Year 7 concentrates on looking at connections between ourselves and other places and people. We look at the World of Sport, the Geography of the British Isles and Weather and Climate. Ecosystems located around the World are studied along with the Economic Activity found in different countries. We study one country in particular – France.

Geography in Year 8 starts with the exciting topic of Earthquakes and Volcanoes after which we look at a country in particular – Japan. We also study Globalisation and Fair Trade and our role in this. The year ends with fieldwork on the River Arun as we study River Processes and Landforms and a study of Recycling and Renewable Energy.

Geography in Year 9 we consider how globally aware we are and look at global citizenship. We study the country Brazil and develop a module on Tourism and National Parks as an example of sustainable development. We also look at a new module of the Geography of Crime both nationally and our local area. We finish KS3 by looking at Local Actions and their Global Effects.

Key Stage 4

Geography in Years 10 – 11 follows the OCR GCSE syllabus A, which is always a very popular and successful option choice, with 1 piece of coursework representing 25% of the final grade.

Leisure and Tourism Years 10 – 11 follows the Edexcel syllabus and is a Double Award GCSE. The coursework represents 66% of their final grade. This is a vocational GCSE which involves a large number of visits to companies, hotels and leisure facilities which give students the opportunity to apply knowledge of the Leisure and Tourism industries in a vocationally relevant way. The course also provides opportunities for progression into employment into Leisure and Tourism industries or higher level vocational qualifications in these or related sectors.

Beyond the Classroom

ICT opportunities are included in most modules of work and there are also several fieldwork trips to complement classroom learning. Extra study sessions are offered in Years 10 and 11.

Parental Support

We encourage parents to help students in their Geography through homework and providing the facilities for them to continue their learning at home. A dialogue between teachers and parents is also welcomed. This is very much a two way process in which parents are encouraged to contact individual teachers at school at any time to discuss any issues relating to their child’s progress in the subject.
