The Inclusion Centre

The Inclusion Centre has a team of 14 Teaching Assistants who support students with additional needs. This is done either in the classroom or by withdrawing students to work in the Inclusion Centre. Here students work in small groups to improve Literacy and Handwriting skills in order that they can better access the curriculum. Some of the Teaching Assistants are specialists in teaching Speech and Language and English as an Additional Language (EAL) as well as supporting students with visual impairment.

We support students with:

  • Speech and Language
  • Specific Learning Needs eg. Aspergers, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia
  • Behaviour/ADHD – anger management, social skills
  • Emotional Needs – school refusers, students with low self-esteem
  • Sensory Impairment – visual and hearing difficulties
  • Physical Impairment

EAL we offer small support groups during the school day:

  • a Handwriting Club during afternoon tutor time for those students that     have been identified as needing extra help
  • Anger Management
  • Social Skills
  • Confidence boosting for those students with low self esteem

If a Statemented student is unable to manage the full curriculum, for whatever reason, we can offer an alternative curriculum. We can apply for exam concessions for KS3 SATS and GCSEs, allowing extra time and help with reading and writing if appropriate.

Transition from Primary School

We liaise closely with our feeder schools to identify vulnerable students. We offer extra Induction Days for these students to smooth the transition between Primary and Secondary Education and we observe the students in the classroom of their Primary Schools in order that we can begin to identify their particular needs.

KS3

All Yr 7 students are screened for Reading and Spelling in the first few weeks of the Autumn Term in order that we can identify those students who will benefit from extra support in a small group setting. Extra support may only be needed for a short period of time or may need to be ongoing, depending on the progress being made.

KS4

Extra support with coursework is available for those Statemented students that need it.

Pastoral Care

The Inclusion Unit provides a supported social group, supervised by a Teaching Assistant, at break times, which is open to any student who is feeling vulnerable. This gives the students the opportunity to chat about any problems in a relaxed, informal environment.

We offer an open door policy to parents — we welcome parents ringing or dropping in to chat with us about any concerns.
