Mathematics
Course Outline
Mathematics is a core subject and studied by all students from Year 7 to Year 11. Lessons are in very well equipped Maths rooms with electronic whiteboards.
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3 students have three lessons a week following:
Using and applying Maths
Number and Algebra
Shape and Space
Handling Data
Our ‘Special School’ status has provided us with the State of the Art electronic software called MathsAlive.
MathsAlive makes use of the latest technology including interactive white boards and specialist software to engage and motivate pupils. It puts students at the centre of the learning process. It helps them make connections between mathematical concepts and their experiences outside the classroom. Topics are studied from below Level 3 to Level 8.
The topics studied are:
Statistics |
3D Work |
Negative Numbers |
Symmetry |
Probability |
Co-ordinates |
Number Patterns |
Algebra |
Scale Drawings |
Arithmetic |
Angles |
Equations |
Shape |
Percentages |
Area |
Decimals |
Fractions |
Averages |
In Year 7 initially students are taught in their tutor groups. At the end of October they are assessed. These results, together with the data from the Primary School, are used to set the students. Year 8 and 9 students are taught in sets. Movements between sets are made throughout the year, keeping them flexible enables students to achieve their full potential. Students will need to be equipped with pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, compass, protractor and a scientific calculator.
Key Stage 4
Pupils follow the GCSE OCR graduated assessment C. This is a modular course where the pupils will sit 1 module in year 10 and the second module in year 11. Each exam has a calculator paper and a non calculator paper. In the summer of year 11 they will sit three terminal exams. There is no coursework for this examination.
The course covers
Data Handling
Algebra
Number
Shape and Space Topics
Pupils who will either sit the Foundation paper which allows them to attain grades G-C, or the Higher paper which enables them to attain grades D-A*.
In addition to this we offer an AS freestanding module or AQA GCSE Statistics to set one, along side their Mathematics GCSE. There is also the opportunity to take GCSE Statistics as a separate option for those students who are in sets 2 and below.

Useful Websites
Pupils have the opportunity to work online using any of the following websites
www.mymaths.co.uk
www.samlearning.com

Beyond the classroom
Homework is set weekly to consolidate classroom learning and there are software packages available on the computers, which can be accessed home, as well as after school. There are weekly revision classes for all GCSE students. Students get the opportunity to participate in National and International Mathematical competitions.
Parental Support
As parents you can support your children in Maths by ensuring that they complete the homework set and that their presentation and organisational skills are of a high standard. It always helps when students come to lessons with the correct equipment and a scientific calculator. The department contacts parents whenever necessary with regard to achievement and behaviour. Your guidance and support is always appreciated.
