Religious Education

Course Outline

Statutory Religious Studies is taken by all students in both Key Stages and has a strong academic tradition in the school. The new Agreed Syllabus for West Sussex is delivered. At Key Stage 4 students can opt to take the GCSE philosophy and ethics full course. The remaining students follow the Philosophy and ethics GCSE short course, where the OCR Examination Specification is followed.  All students sit one 2 hour exam at the end of the course, leading to a GCSE.

Course Content - Key Stage 3

Through the programmes of study students learn the origins, beliefs, practices and lifestyles of the followers of the six main World Faiths. The implications of faith leading to action in response to personal, social and global issues are explored.

Subject Organisation

Students in Key Stage 3 are taught in their general subject teaching groups. Key Stage 4 groups are taught in their English sets.

Beyond the Classroom

In Key Stage 3 homework is set weekly with particular stress on tasks which will develop study skills and consolidate learning. There is no homework for Key Stage 4 non-examination groups. Revision and support groups run regularly. A Christian Union has recently been established.

Parental Support

Contact with parents is welcomed, especially where course content may give rise to particular issues they feel the need to discuss. Support with research, planning and organisational skills, as well as helping to maintain high standards with homework, is much appreciated.
