Shakespeare School's Festival

As part of the Shakespeare School’s Festival, a group of Year 9 students performed a fresh and exciting interpretation of A Taming of the Shrew at the Leatherhead Theatre on Friday 9th October 2008.

Shakespeare School’s festival is a national event which aims to give young people the chance to explore and perform the work of William Shakespeare in a professional theatre environment.

Tanbridge chose The Taming of the Shrew because it allowed the cast to explore culturally relevant themes and issues, such as domestic abuse, in an inventive and engaging way. Their approach was bright, dynamic and original. Using dance alongside physical and stylised theatre, Tanbridge created a piece that allowed a modern audience to access, understand and appreciate the language of Shakespeare.

Directed by Drama teachers, Maria Williams and Kirsty Mackay, with assistance from Year 11 student Greg McClarnon and technical direction from Year 10 student Oliver Hance, The Taming of the Shrew received rapturous applause from the audience and an outstanding appraisal from Ellie McCrea, the festival’s professional Director.

Ms McCrea commented; “This fresh and exciting interpretation is one which should be performed again and again.”
