Students inspire as first aiders
A team of young first aiders from Tanbridge House School proved to be top lifesavers last week when they competed in the final of St John Ambulance's National Schools First Aid Competition.
The five-strong team, who learnt first aid at school, had already seen off local rivals in a regional round by showing their ability to stay calm and in control, while working as a team.
They challenged other senior schools by confidently taking the lead in scenarios such as how to handle a dog bite, dislocations and an amputation.
The team members involved were Dan Phillips, Matt Kimber, Elizabeth Milbank, Katie Grzegorzek and Connor Norris.
In total, 11 schools took part in the senior school category of the competition at London's Natural History Museum, with Tanbridge House Team finishing in a superb third place.
Teacher Mrs Leadbeater said: "This team of young people have worked so hard to get through to the final of the competition and their dedication has certainly paid off. We are so proud of their achievement and look forward to being able to do even better next year.
By learning first aid in school, the pupils now have valuable life skills to take forward into their adult lives so to be recognised for being so good is a real success for them and us as a school."
Prizes were given by Sarah Earnshaw, who plays good witch Glinda in the hit West End musical, WICKED. She said: "First aid is so important. You can't just wave a magic wand and make everything better. It's inspiring to see so many young people learning such an important skill and be so calm and in control."
