Tanbridge students take on The Tempest
A group of Year 9 students performed The Tempest at Roedean Theatre as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival on 2nd November.
The students began the rehearsal process before the summer holidays and worked extremely hard during breaks, holidays and after school to produce an amazingly creative and stylised piece of theatre. With guidance from Jon Packham and Emmet O’Rahilly (Yr11 Student Directors) and James Ashford (Yr10 Student Technical and Stage Manager) they made Shakespeare’s classic their own, finding ways to capture the comedy and engage the audience with their incredible visual and physical interpretation of the text.
The students gave the audience, made up of other Sussex schools and their own friends, family and teachers, an exciting and entertaining experience, as well as developing their own professional theatre experience and love for Shakespeare. The students have been showered with excellent reviews from many members of the audience and the professionals from Shakespeare Schools Festival. It was a truly amazing experience for all involved.
Phoebe Gardiner from the Shakespeare Schools Festival said: “I was thoroughly impressed by the level of professionalism, both on and off stage and have nothing but praise for how everyone conducted themselves throughout their performance days.”
One audience member said: “I was really blown away by the imaginativeness, if that is a word, of your show. It was so funny and wacky! Truly, amazingly creative. Well done. I wish I could see it again. If you ever bring it out on DVD let me know as I’d like to buy it!”
