Travelling the right way
Tanbridge House School has been awarded the Level 2 Travel Award by West Sussex County Council, showing the strong commitment that the school has to travel and environmental issues.
The school does a lot to promote environmental issues through its student Eco-Representatives and has worked hard to make staff and students think about the ways in which they travel to work and how this affects the environment. The Level Two Award was awarded to Tanbridge for its extensive promotion of walk to school week, bike it week, attending travel conferences and promoting car sharing for staff via a car share notice board.
Tanbridge was also awarded £200 prize money by Travelwise for completing the most Travel Surveys in a recent travel competition having returned over 1000 surveys. This money will be spent on launching initiatives to promote sensible behaviour in regard to travel/cycling.
Shirley Sweet, who manages the Eco-Representatives and has worked extensively on travel issues, said: “The main aim now is to encourage pupils to wear helmets when cycling, reflective strips and lights, and to realise why these are important”
Pene Mather from West Sussex County Council, said: “Tanbridge is a wonderful example of school with an active travel plan and is committed to the promotion of sustainable and safe travel to their school, I am very pleased to be working with the school on a range of measures to improve safety and travel links and would like to thank the Tanbridge pupils for their enthusiasm in and work in the recent travel surveys.”
