Design & Technology

Design and Technology encompasses a wide range of inspiring, creative and practical subjects where students research, design and make products that solve a real and relevant problems. Students explore this is a variety of contexts such as Resistant Materials, Graphic Products, Product Design, Textiles and Food and Nutrition, considering their own needs and the wants and needs of others.  

Aims: 

  • To develop the creative, technical and practical understanding needed to complete tasks confidently and to participate successfully in the Design and Technology curriculum  
  • Build and apply knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users  
  • Analyse, evaluate and test ideas and products and the work of others  
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook. 

The knowledge, understanding and skills that all students must develop have been separated into:  

  • Technical principles 
  • Designing and making principles

Year 7 – 10 students all follow the same sequence in the curriculum planned where they revisit prior learning, apply existing knowledge and develop it further and demonstrate their understanding in their written communication, design development, manufacturing, evaluation and assessment. When students reach year 11 they then have the ability to independently complete the non exam assessment with secure knowledge and understanding.
