PSHE
At Tanbridge House School, we believe that PSHE is important for our students and our school because, in this ever-changing environment in which we live, our students must feel well equipped and confident in dealing with its many challenges, opportunities and risks that it brings. It is important to us that students are aware of different factors which will affect their world and that they are well equipped with the key skills to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being.
We want our students to know what is right, to be safe, to respect others and know how to access help and support when they need it. Our overarching aim therefore, is to provide a safe environment where students can acquire the knowledge and skills to develop their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical selves. We help students to confidently prepare for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of now and later life. We nurture them into acquiring the confidence and self-esteem to value themselves and others and respect for individual conscience.
Our PSHE lessons follow a spiral curriculum with key themes such as; Relationship, Health & Sex Education, Digital and Media Literacy, Physical & Emotional Health, Mental Wellbeing, Financial management as well as Citizenship. This rich curriculum not only results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable students to access the wider curriculum, but it also helps in building students’ resilience and emotional literacy which is vital as they navigate their way through the global society. It is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life.
We use a whole school approach where our ethos of care, kindness and achievement as well as British Values of mutual respect, equality and tolerance are the underpinning values. PSHE is taught weekly in Y7 and fortnightly in Years 8 to 10 during lesson times. Year 11s enjoy themed talks, workshops and presentations from various outside speakers to build on the excellent PSHE lessons they’ve received thus far.
We strive to help our students become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society. We want them to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that, with the right attitude, anything is possible.
Our intention is that when our students leave Tanbridge House School, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society.
